Where 4.54609 is the exact conversion factor for liters per imperial gallon. The kilometer result multiplies the mile figure by 1.609344. No allowance is made for reserve fuel warnings or unusable residual volume in the tank.
Where this method is most accurate
The calculation is a direct unit conversion and arithmetic product; mathematical accuracy is exact. Real-world range depends on the validity of the input MPG figure. Manufacturer combined-cycle economy figures are laboratory-derived; actual consumption varies with driving style, traffic, load, temperature, tire pressure, and terrain. Tank capacity stated in vehicle handbooks typically represents total geometric volume; some vehicles reserve 5–10% for the low-fuel warning, reducing usable capacity.
What this tool does not do
The calculator does not measure or verify fuel economy; it accepts the MPG input as given. It does not account for reserve fuel margins, fuel-pump pickup geometry, or vapor space. It does not adjust for different fuel densities, ethanol blends, or seasonal reformulations. The tool performs no vehicle-specific lookup; all outputs derive solely from the two numeric inputs provided.

- Why does this calculator use 4.54609 for the gallon conversion?
- 4.54609 liters per gallon is the statutory definition of the imperial gallon, used in many countries including the UK, Canada, and Australia. This differs from the US gallon (3.78541 liters), so imperial MPG and US MPG figures are not directly comparable.
- Does the result account for reserve fuel or low-fuel warnings?
- No. The calculation multiplies total stated tank capacity by economy. Many vehicles trigger a low-fuel warning when 5–10 liters remain, effectively reducing usable range. The tool does not subtract reserve volume; it assumes the entire input capacity is available.
- Can I use US MPG with this calculator?
- The formula is hard-coded for imperial gallons (4.54609 L). Entering a US MPG figure will over-estimate range by approximately 20 per cent because US gallons are smaller. Convert US MPG to imperial MPG first (multiply US MPG by 1.20095) if needed.
- Why does my real-world range differ from the calculator result?
