Annual Commute Cost Calculator
Calculate your total annual commuting cost including fuel and parking over any number of days.

What this tool does
This calculator computes the total annual cost of commuting by car, combining fuel expenditure and parking fees. It accepts one-way distance in miles, MPG, fuel price per liter, annual commute days, and yearly parking cost; the engine converts imperial MPG to liters per mile using the imperial gallon constant (4.54609 liters), multiplies by round-trip mileage and fuel price, then adds parking to produce an annual total. Outputs include per-day and per-week costs alongside annual fuel and mileage totals.

How Annual Commute Cost Calculator works
This tool estimates the yearly cost of driving to and from work by multiplying round-trip distance by the number of commute days, converting fuel consumption from miles-per-gallon into liters per mile, applying the current price per liter, and adding any annual parking fees. The result is a single figure representing total commuting expenditure over the period specified.
The formula
Annual cost = (2 × one-way miles × commute days × liters per mile × price/liter) + annual parking, where liters per mile = 4.54609 ÷ MPG. The constant 4.54609 is the number of liters in one imperial gallon, ensuring that imperial MPG ratings convert correctly to metric fuel consumption. The calculator also divides the annual total by the number of commute days to show daily cost and multiplies by five to show a typical working week.
Where this method is most accurate
The calculation assumes the MPG figure entered reflects real-world fuel economy over the commute route; official manufacturer ratings often differ from observed consumption in stop-start traffic or hilly terrain. Parking cost is treated as a flat annual sum; any daily or monthly variability must be annualized manually before entry. The method does not account for wear-and-tear, insurance, registration fees, servicing or depreciation—only direct fuel and parking outlay.
What this tool does not do
This calculator does not estimate total cost of vehicle ownership, recommend whether a commute distance is financially viable, incorporate congestion charges or toll roads, model electric-vehicle charging costs, or adjust for seasonal fuel-price fluctuations. It produces a snapshot based on the inputs provided and does not predict future prices or suggest alternative transport modes.
Disclaimer
This tool is provided for educational and planning purposes only. It performs a mathematical calculation using the values entered and does not constitute financial, tax or vehicle-operation advice. Actual commuting costs vary with driving style, traffic conditions, vehicle maintenance and local fuel pricing. Users remain responsible for verifying their own vehicle efficiency figures and parking arrangements.
Questions
- Why does the calculator use 4.54609 liters per gallon?
- The constant 4.54609 converts imperial gallons to liters. Imperial MPG ratings are based on the imperial gallon, which is larger than the US gallon (3.785 liters), so this conversion ensures accurate fuel-consumption calculations for vehicles rated in imperial MPG.
- Does the annual total include car insurance or depreciation?
- No. The calculator sums only fuel expenditure and parking fees. Insurance premiums, registration fees, servicing, tires and depreciation are separate ownership costs not captured by this commute-specific formula.
- How should I enter parking cost if I pay monthly?
- Multiply the monthly fee by twelve to obtain an annual figure, then enter that total in the annual parking field. The tool does not break down monthly or daily parking separately.
- What if my MPG varies between summer and winter?
- The calculator applies a single MPG value across all commute days. To model seasonal variation, run separate calculations for each period—using higher MPG for summer miles and lower for winter—then sum the results manually.
- Can I use this calculator for electric vehicles?
- No. The formula converts MPG to liters of fuel; it does not handle kilowatt-hours per mile or electricity pricing. A separate EV energy-cost calculator would be required for battery-electric commuting.

Sources & Methodology
The engine calculates round-trip annual mileage (2 × one-way distance × days), converts imperial MPG to liters per mile using the imperial gallon constant 4.54609, multiplies annual mileage by liters per mile and fuel price per liter to obtain fuel cost, then adds annual parking. The imperial gallon is defined as exactly 4.54609 liters.
